Kenting rangers tell drivers to watch out for land crabs

The Kenting National Park Administration yesterday urged motorists to slow down when driving on the highway near the coastal areas of Pingtung County because large numbers of land crabs will soon be making their way down to the sea to lay eggs.
Hundreds of the crabs will start crossing Provincial Highway No. 1 to spawn on the seashore at the beginning of next month and continuing through late October, which is the high season for land crabs to spawn, park rangers told reporters.
Because the highway separates the land crabs¡¦ normal habitat from their spawning grounds, the crustaceans are frequently crushed by passing vehicles, prompting the park administration to enact traffic restrictions at the peak spawning season to protect the creatures.
The move is a part of increasing efforts by the government and people in recent years to protect animals and the environment.
The highway runs along Kenting¡¦s Banana Bay, of which the section near Oluanpi (ÃZÆq»ó) is the main spawning area for the crabs.
During this period, female crabs loaded with eggs make their way across the highway down to the sea to spawn at nighttime.
