A public research group in Spain recently included 10 Taiwanese universities in a list of the world’s top 500 universities.
Based on the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities — an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) in Spain — that was made public last month, National Taiwan University ranked 55th on the list, while National Chiao Tung University came in at 179th place in the line-up.
The research group said on its Web site (www.webometrics.info) that it had reviewed 14,876 higher education institutions in 191 countries based on the number of Web pages related to the institutions recovered from four main search engines, the visibility of the institutions, the number of one word files relevant to the institutions’ academic and publication activities and the number of research papers and citations for each academic field from the researchers in the institutions.
National Taiwan Normal University, National Cheng Kung University and National Sun Yat-sen University came in at 273rd, 274th and 282nd, respectively.
Also on the list of the world’s top 500 universities were National Central University, National Chung Cheng University, National Chengchi University and Tamkang University.
