The Tainan County Government will turn a disused salt field into a wetland area that will benefit its ecological conservation efforts, an official said on Thursday.
The county will spend five years transforming the 16-hectare salt field in Chiku Township (七股) into a wetland ecology park, said Yang Ya-chu (楊雅竹), an official with the Department of Agriculture’s forest biodiversity and conservation section.
He admitted, however, that Taiwan has not had any success so far in turning salt fields into productive land.
The county has commissioned academics from National Chiayi University, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute to design the project. It signed a contract on Wednesday with the company that will carry out the project.
Yang said the county hopes to see the project pay off within five years, although he said a subsidy of NT$40 million (US$1.2 million) from the central government would barely cover the costs of the project’s initial phase, which will last until the end of next year.
