Women-only center opens

Taipei City Hospital will open its first women-only sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic today at its Kunming branch in Ximending to provide a safe and friendly medical environment for women.

The clinic, also known as the STD control center, will be open on every second and fourth Friday night, the hospital said at a press conference at Taipei City Hall yesterday.

Hu Bao-yun (胡寶筠), the center’s head nurse, said the women-only clinic would be the first in Taipei.

The center opened the clinic and invited female doctors to take charge as many women with STDs or generative organ diseases tend to avoid visiting hospitals out of shyness or shame.

Data provided by the branch showed that of the 42,590 patients who received treatment at the STD center this year, women accounted for 11 percent.

Most of the female STD patients who visited the hospitals were sex workers, or were taken there by their partners, who were also infected with an STD, data showed.

“Traditionally, women who have a sexual disease are seen as bad. As a result, those women tend to be reluctant to visit a hospital,” she said.

Hu said the more frequent STDs affecting woman included gonorrhea and syphilis, adding that delaying treatment could cause sterility or abnormality in embryos.

Hu called on women with symptoms of sexual disease to be courageous and go to hospital for treatment.
