Chen Yunlin's (陳雲林) visit to Taiwan has drawn widespread media attention, with more than 130 local and foreign news organizations covering the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) chairman's arrival yesterday, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said.
More than 500 local and foreign reporters from 138 media outlets received approval to cover Chen's arrival and speech at the Grand Hotel, where he will be staying during his visit, the MAC said.
More than 1,000 journalists had applied to cover the highest level visit by a Chinese official since 1949, but only 574 were approved because of space limitations at the hotel, the MAC said.

Among the 574 journalists covering the event were 30 reporters from China, including the director of Xinhua news agency's Taiwan desk. Several major foreign news outlets, including the New York Times and Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun, have also been reporting on Chen's visit.

A cold surge advisory was today issued for 18 cities and counties across Taiwan, with temperatures of below 10°C forecast during the day and into tonight, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Snow this morning fell on Alishan for the first time in seven years, as a strong continental cold air mass sent temperatures plunging across Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The Alishan weather station, located at an elevation of about 2,200m in central Taiwan, recorded snowfall from 8:55am to 9:15am, when the temperature dropped to about 1°C, the CWA said.
