Cross-strait accords must get legislative approval: Wang

By Shih Hsiu-chuan  /  STAFF REPORTER

Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) said yesterday that any cross-strait agreements signed during next week’s negotiations would require legislative confirmation.

Wang was speaking ahead of China’s Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Chairman Chen Yunlin (陳雲林) in Taipei tomorrow for the latest round of negotiations with Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Chiang Pin-kung (江丙坤).

“Of course, deals [Taiwanese negotiators strike with their Chinese counterparts] need to be sent to the legislature as the legislature represents the public,” Wang said.

Wang said that any cross-strait agreements were of extreme importance to the country so they had to be supervised by the legislature, citing Article 95 of the Act Governing Relations Between Peoples of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (兩岸人民關係條例).
