Hikers and bikers might be interested in joining the Silver Grass Season on the Caoling Historical Trail (¯óÀ¥j¹D¨~ªá©u), which begins next month.
The mountain trail was one of the important passages connecting Taipei and Ilan before the east coast railway system was built in the early 20th century. It was named Caoling (¯óÀ) because of all the silver grass that grows along the trail.
The Northeast and Ilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration, which has held the event for the past seven years, said on the weekend that visitors can go hiking on the trail at this time of year and see the silver grass in full bloom.
After the hike, visitors can bike through the Old Caoling Tunnel (¯óÀÀG¹D) and continue along Provincial Highway No. 2 to Fulong (ºÖ¶©), which offers a scenic coastal view.
People seeking a less physically demanding day can sign on to tour packages offered by travel agencies. Early birds will receive additional discounts, the Northeast and Ilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration said, adding that hotels, restaurants and hostels within the area may also offer discounts.
To reach the trail, visitors can take the TRA¡¦s northbound trains to Fulong, where a shuttle bus will take them to the starting point.
