A Taiwanese woman who sponsors a Mongolian child has bought a yurt to shelter the child and her family from the country*s severe weather, the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families said yesterday.
Wang Ming-jen (王明仁), executive director of the fund, said that Chien Hsiu-chih (簡秀治), principal of Fongming Elementary School in Kaohsiung, began sponsoring a sixth-grade girl named Erdenetuya in Mongolia two years ago.
Erdenetuya lived with her mother and younger brother in a rented yurt in Ulan Bator.

Her mother does odd jobs on the street for a living, but had to stop working for several months because of the wintry climate in Mongolia.
It started to snow last month, leaving the family in a precarious position, Wang said.
Chien and her family decided to buy a yurt for Erdenetuya*s family after photos showed the rented dwelling was not strong enough for them to endure sandstorms and freezing winds of minus 30足C during the winter months.
Chien spent NT$30,000 buying the yurt and another NT$3,000 on mattresses for Erdenetuya and her brother, Wang said.
The yurt that Chien bought was the first donated by a Taiwanese after the fund established a village for disadvantaged children in Ulan Bator last year, a fund executive said.
The village*s 20 yurts were all donated by Taiwanese and each yurt has the donor*s name on it, the executive said, adding that the fund plans to expand the village to benefit more needy children.
A total of 2,844 Taiwanese are sponsoring 3,957 children via the fund, the executive said.
Taiwan would benefit from more integrated military strategies and deployments if the US and its allies treat the East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea as a “single theater of operations,” a Taiwanese military expert said yesterday. Shen Ming-shih (沈明室), a researcher at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, said he made the assessment after two Japanese military experts warned of emerging threats from China based on a drill conducted this month by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Eastern Theater Command. Japan Institute for National Fundamentals researcher Maki Nakagawa said the drill differed from the

Democracy means the rule of the people, not the rule of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), but Lai has failed to fulfill his
A rally held by opposition parties yesterday demonstrates that Taiwan is a democratic country, President William Lai (賴清德) said yesterday, adding that if opposition parties really want to fight dictatorship, they should fight it on Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) held a protest with the theme “against green communists and dictatorship,” and was joined by the Taiwan People’s Party. Lai said the opposition parties are against what they called the “green communists,” but do not fight against the “Chinese communists,” adding that if they really want to fight dictatorship, they should go to the right place and face
