A college graduate has won an award at the New Blood Exhibition, a design event for new college graduates in Britain, a Ming Chuan University spokesman said yesterday

Hsiao Yu-wei (¿½¦t´Q), a Ming Chuan graduate, studied at Robert Gordon University in Britain under an exchange student program in her senior year and returned to Taiwan in July.

She won the Best New Blood Award, a prominent prize in recognition of a young designer¡¦s potential, at the exhibition held in late June in London.

Hsiao¡¦s winning design, titled ¡§Guo Guo,¡¨ is a kaleidoscopic sock design of flowers blooming and fruit-laden plants. ¡§Guo¡¨ means fruit in Chinese.

Hsiao said she was surprised to learn about her win.

¡§I took part in the event only because I wanted to see other people¡¦s work,¡¨ she said, adding that she tried to represent the changes of the seasons with the colors used in her design.

Hsiao said very few people pay a great deal of attention to their socks, but for her they are something that not only protect feet but also warm the heart if the design is good.

She said she hoped her design would allow people to ¡§feel¡¨ their feet.

The New Blood Exhibition is a showcase for recent graduates from arts courses in Britain and includes samples of graphic design, animation, package design and installation art.

The event is similar to Taiwan¡¦s Young Designers¡¦ Exhibition, which is a platform for talented designers to showcase their work, Hsiao said.
