The winner of the latest Super Lotto jackpot donated nearly half of his prize money ¡X NT$454 million (US$14.95 million) ¡X to a church and a charity organization yesterday, making it the largest donation by a jackpot winner since Taiwan began the Public Welfare Lottery in 1999.
Oliver Shang (©|·ç±j), chairman of Taiwan Lottery Co, the exclusive operator of the Public Welfare Lottery, said the winner, in his 50s, is married with a daughter in junior high school and works in the service industry.
The man, accompanied by his wife, cashed the prize earlier in the day and then donated NT$200 million to his church and another NT$10 million to the Chinatrust Charity Foundation-organized campaign that helps socially disadvantaged children escape poverty.
The donor said he and his wife had an agreement that ¡§they would not change their lifestyle if they won the jackpot¡¨ and would continue to help promote public welfare.
Aside from the donation, the couple has bought savings-oriented insurance with a big portion of the rest of the money and deposited the rest in the bank, Taiwan Lottery said.
