Enterovirus — the most common cause of aseptic meningitis — can cause serious illness and death, especially in infants and people whose immune systems have been compromised.
Noting that 192 severe enterovirus infections have been recorded in Taiwan so far this year — eight of which had proven fatal — Hau said that everyone, especially school children, should wash their hands frequently and thoroughly.
“Society, schools, parents and children must make efforts to prevent the enterovirus from spreading,” he said at a press conference organized by the Department of Health at an elementary school.

A 79-year-old woman died today after being struck by a train at a level crossing in Taoyuan, police said. The woman, identified by her surname Wang (王), crossed the tracks even though the barriers were down in Jhongli District’s (中壢) Neili (內壢) area, the Taoyuan Branch of the Railway Police Bureau said.
