Vice Speaker Tseng to lead Paralympics delegation to China

    By Flora Wang
    STAFF REPORTER
    Monday, Jun 09, 2008, Page 3

Legislative Vice Speaker Tseng Yung-chuan (´¿¥ÃÅv) will lead the nation¡¦s delegation to the Paralympic Games in Beijing in September, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (¤ýª÷¥) said yesterday.

Wang made the remarks after he was approached for comment during a Dragon Boat Festival event in Changhua County.

    FIRST LADY

On Friday the Presidential Office rejected Wang¡¦s suggestion that first lady Chow Mei-ching (©P¬ü«C) head the delegation. Office spokesman Wang Yu-chi (¤ý§µa) said Chow would not attend the Paralympics and had no plans to visit China at the moment.

Wang said yesterday that he respected the decision and understood the Presidential Office¡¦s concerns.

Wang had suggested that the first lady would be the best candidate to lead the delegation because she was in a position to promote charity work while enhancing the nation¡¦s visibility at the international event.

He said former first lady Wu Shu-jen (§d²Q¬Ã) led a similar delegation four years ago.

    MUTUAL GOODWILL

Wang had also said Beijing would be less likely to treat the delegation with disrespect and attempt to downgrade its status if Chow led the group and that the event would be an opportunity for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to demonstrate mutual goodwill.

In response to Wang¡¦s proposal, Chinese Nationalist Party Legislator Wu Yu-sheng (§d¨|ª@) had expressed concern that sending the first lady to the event would be too controversial.
