An enterovirus epidemic control center has opened on the island of Lanyu, also known as Orchid Island, off the southeast coast of Taiwan, after a fatal case was reported there, local officials said yesterday.
All Lanyu residents have been on the alert against a possible outbreak of the illness since a 15-month-old girl there was confirmed on Friday to have died of enterovirus infection.
The island — which has a population of nearly 4,000 people, 90 percent of whom belong to the indigenous Tao tribe — also recorded more than 30 other suspected cases of enterovirus infection, Lanyu Township chief Chou Kuei-kang (周貴光) said.
Chou urged tourists to wash their hands thoroughly with soap.
