Police identify rape and murder suspect from security video

Police yesterday identified a middle-aged man as a suspect in the rape and murder of a middle-aged woman.

Police said the suspect, Lin Chi-shan (林吉杉), 45, is the boss of a factory in China. Officers said they tried unsuccessfully to arrest him at his Taiwan home yesterday and were now attempting to prevent him from leaving the country.

Lin, who is married, had been dating the deceased woman, surnamed Yeh, police said.

They said police had received a call from one of Yeh’s two senior high school student daughters on Thursday evening saying that she had found her mother’s naked body lying on her bed in their home in Sinjhuang (新莊), Taipei County.

Officers who went to the scene found the victim had 15 slash wounds to her neck and one stab wound to her throat. Yeh’s hands and legs had been tied with tape, police added. Yeh had been raped before she was killed.

Police identified Lin using footage from a surveillance camera in the elevator at Yeh’s apartment. The man in the elevator had tried to hide his face by wearing a hat as he entered and left the apartment on Thursday afternoon, but Yeh’s daughters identified the man as Lin.

Police said Yeh’s daughters had told them Lin had become angry with their mother because she wanted to break up with Lin and had been avoiding him since February.

Yeh’s daughters told officers that Lin often sent text messages to her mother’s cellphone, threatening to harm their family. They said Lin had threatened to rape them in one of the messages.

During their investigations, officers discovered that Lin and Yeh had met about 25 years ago when Yeh worked as a cashier at a drink shop in Kinmen and Lin was completing his compulsory military service there.

Lin had pursued Yeh enthusiastically at the time, but they did not date.

Then three years ago they met again in Taipei. When Lin discovered Yeh was a widow, he started to pursue Yeh again, even though he had a family of his own.

Police said they dated for a while before Yeh told Lin she wanted to break up with him.
