Indonesian authorities have arrested two Taiwanese for trying to smuggle nearly 7kg of crystal methamphetamine into the country, local media reports said yesterday.
The two, identified as Kuo Ting-liu, 23, and Huang Yu-lum, 26, were arrested on Friday by customs officers at Jakarta¡¦s Soekarno-Hatta International airport, soon after they arrived on a China Airlines flight from Hong Kong, the state-run Antara news agency reported.
A spokesman from the airport¡¦s customs office said that officers seized 6.9kg of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as ¡§shabu-shabu,¡¨ estimated to be worth at about US$1.08 million on the local market.
If charged and convicted of smuggling narcotics, the men face a maximum penalty of death under Indonesia¡¦s tough anti-drug laws.
