Some 100 workers from Hsinchu Science Park gathered yesterday to launch a "cycling to work" campaign, urging people employed at the park to improve their health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by choosing a greener mode of transport.

Wearing safety helmets and biking gear, workers assembled outside the park's administration building in the morning to promote the drive, calling on their co-workers to cycle to work at least one day a week.

Lulu Hsieh (謝倩瑩), chairwoman of the park's biking club, said she hoped the 139-member club would grow as a result of the campaign.

Many of the club's members are enthusiastic about cycling to work, with one biking to work each day from Toufen Township (頭份), Miaoli County -- a 45-minute ride.

Some 130,000 people, work at Hsinchu Science Park, including factory and assembly line workers, engineers and scientists. The park is the first and largest science park in the country.

Science Park Administration director Huang Teh-jui (黃德瑞) lauded bikers' initiative at the launch yesterday.

Hsieh urged the park administration to create bike lanes and install restroom facilities for cyclists within and near the park.

She also called on drivers to keep an eye open for bikes on the road and give them plenty of space.
