A Changhua senior high school student was seriously ill in hospital yesterday after attempting to commit suicide by drinking pesticide after his girlfriend's dead body was found.
The life of the 18-year-old surnamed Hu remains in danger, Changhua police said yesterday.
The incident occurred after a young girl's body was found under a bridge in a mountainous area of Fenyuan Township (芬園) in Changhua County on Friday.
Police identified the girl as a 16-year-old senior high school student surnamed Ho.
They said the victim had been strangled and thrown off the 10m-high bridge. Police found injuries to the victim's genitals and traces of semen, indicating that she had been sexually assaulted.
Ho's family had reported her missing on Thursday after she went out with Hu, police said.
While attempting to locate Hu late on Sunday night, police received a report of an intruder at a residence in Fenyuan.
Police entered the residence and found Hu concealed under a bag. He had already consumed half a bottle of pesticide. Hu was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his stomach was pumped.
Ho's family told police that their daughter had started dating Hu after school started in September. Ho's parents said their daughter often went out with Hu and came home late, adding that the couple had been in a sexual relationship since October.
Ho's parents told police they had filed a sexual assault suit against Hu, accusing him of having sex with a minor.
Police said that Ho's parents had asked her not to go out with Hu.
Hu had asked Ho to meet him to talk about the matter, police said.
Hu had recovered enough to be able to talk to police yesterday afternoon, police added.
They said Hu told them he and Ho had arranged to commit suicide together on Thursday, but he had backed out.
Hu said he did not know how Ho had fallen from the bridge, police said.
