    Taoyuan sister-city rejects demands

The Voice of America recently reported that representatives from Irvine City, California, voted to cease arrangements to become the sister city of Xuhui district (徐匯區) in Shanghai over the latter's demand that it cease a similar arrangement with Taoyuan, the Central News Agency (CNA) reported yesterday.

Korean-born city council member Sukhee Kang, who led a visit to Xuhui last year, insisted that a demand that Irvine discontinue its relationship with Taoyuan was unacceptable.

The sister-city relationship was between the people of the two cities, and the Chinese determination to politicize the issue was disappointing, Kang was quoted as saying in the report.

The report said Irvine would not terminate its relationship with Taoyuan.

Kang was also quoted as saying that as Los Angeles is a sister city of both Taipei and Guangzhou, and Monterey Park is a sister city of both Quanzhou and Yonghe, it was difficult to understand why Irvine should not be allowed to continue its sister-city relationship with Taoyuan, which is long-standing.
