Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday slammed President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), accusing him of ignoring the hardship endured by average Taiwanese.
"President Chen used to say that a leader should treat the public with love and care, but his recent remarks only hurt the public instead," Ma said during a visit to the Maokong Cable Car in Muzha, Taipei City.
Ma made the remarks in response to a report in the Chinese-language China Times quoting Chen during a visit in Miaoli County on Saturday.
Addressing his supporters, Chen accused Ma of selling out the nation by believing in the so-called "1992 consensus," the newspaper said.
Chen also lashed out at those who criticize the central government at every turn and praise China, the paper said.
"Is China so great? There's no lid on the Pacific Ocean. If some people think China is better, they can swim there," the newspaper quoted Chen as saying.
Ma said that he was shocked by Chen's comment, adding that a national leader should not make remarks implying people should leave the country.
"President Chen doesn't feel the public's pain. He has even isolated himself from the public. Those remarks should not be made by a country's leader," Ma said.
