CRIME SPREE: The robbers are suspected of committing an average of three to four robberies a week, stealing from places such as illegal casinos and betel nut shops

Police yesterday arrested a group of robbers that committed more than 100 robberies in six months, mainly robbing illegal casinos.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said in a press statement yesterday that because the criminal group thought illegal casinos would dare not report robberies to the police, they forced their way into several establishments with masks and heavy weapons and looted.

The CIB said the group usually sent members to learn the details of the casinos before they committed the crimes, which allowed them to get in and out of the casinos quickly.

Police arrested nine suspects between the ages of 18 and 23, including main suspects Chen Cheng-chih (³¯¦¨´¼) and Lia Chen-yi (¿à®¶¼Ý).

According to the CIB, the suspects are all school dropouts who committed crimes to lead luxurious lives.

Police seized a number of weapons including rifles, pistols and long knives.

The CIB said the suspects also robbed temporary shops at construction sites and betel nut shops in Taipei,Taoyuan and Hsinchu counties.

They committed an average of three to four robberies a week and committed more than 100 robberies in six months, the CIB said.

Police said they had tracked the group for two months, and as the suspects got together early yesterday morning in a house in Taipei County to prepare for another robbery, police raided the house and arrested the nine without firing a shot.
