    Man scratches KMT legislator

    STAFF WRITER, WITH CNA

Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lee Ching-hua (李慶華) was slightly wounded on one arm by a man who attacked him while he was canvassing votes yesterday morning in Taipei County.

The man followed Lee chanting "Long live the Republic of Taiwan" as Lee visited Jhongjheng market in Sijhih (汐止) to talk to vendors and local residents as part of his re-election campaign.

Lee said that an unidentified man in his 50s began following him and campaign staffer around 10am, and attacked Lee and his assistants for about 15 minutes, throwing bottles and shoes at them before fleeing the scene.

Lee had received telephone threats before the incident.

He said the attack was an insult both to democracy and Sijhih residents, adding that he would not be intimidated by violence.

Lee reported the incident to police and visited a doctor before resuming his canvassing in Sijhih, where some people accused him of having staged the attack as a publicity stunt.
