Eye doctor cautions against risks of spa spouts for the eyes

    By Fang Chih-hsien
    STAFF REPORTER
    Monday, Sep 24, 2007, Page 2

A doctor warned people to beware of spa spouts after treating a man who had suffered damage to the his iris, developed cataracts and a decline in his eyesight after massaging his eyes with spa water.

Kaoshiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital eye doctor Wu Pei-chang (吳佩昌) said that an elderly resident of Kaohsiung County had sought his help after experiencing a serious decline in eyesight and blurred vision.

An eye exam showed that the patient's iris had been damaged, causing a cataract.

    INVESTIGATION

The man's left eye had vision of 0.6 while that in his right eye was 0.002.

Wu determined that the man's eyes were likely to have been injured by an external agent, as a naturally occurring cataract would not have led to such a marked difference in eyesight between the two eyes.

The man told Wu he sometimes massaged his eyes in front of the spa spout while swimming, adding he always kept his eyes closed while doing did so.

Based on this, Wu was able to determine that the spa spout was responsible for the damage to his man's eyes.

    WARNING

Spa spouts may be used to massage muscles, but they are too strong for sensitive organs like the eyes.

Fortunately for the patient, he was treated in time and the cataract did not have time develop into glaucoma.

He will be able to recover his eyesight by having a cataract operation.
