A woman and her live-in boyfriend were arrested yesterday on suspicion of murdering the woman's three-year-old daughter.
Yang Ming-li (楊敏利), a police officer in Tainan County's Jiali Township (佳里), told reporters yesterday that the woman, surnamed Wang, 24, went to the Jiali police station on Friday afternoon to report that her daughter was missing.
questioning
Since Wang was unable to provide details about her daughter's disappearance, police called in her boyfriend, surnamed Kuo, 29, for questioning, Yang said.
After a couple of hours of questioning, the couple said that the girl had choked on her own vomit and died, Yang said.
Kuo said they did not report the "incident" because they did not want to publicize their affair.
The deceased was the daughter of Wang and her ex-husband.
Kuo and Wang currently live together in Jiali, and they have a one-year-old daughter.
Kuo also has three children with his wife.
Yang said the couple admitted to bringing the body to a bridge and throwing it into the Tsengwen River (曾文溪).
search
Police brought the pair to the riverside to search for the girl's body yesterday. Boats were also dispatched to find the body.
The search was still going on at press time.
Yang said police suspected the little girl did not die accidentally but might have been murdered by the pair.
Yang said Kuo had also told police that they did not report the girl's death because he did not to want spend money on a funeral.
