The city government has selected the No. 16 and No. 17 wharves at the harbor as the site for the planned music center, although the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau Workers Industrial Union is strongly opposed to the decision, saying commercial ventures are more important to the city than leisure activities.
City government officials say that the two wharves are both bulk cargo wharves, which account for only a small portion of the harbor's container business.
The Council for Cultural Affairs has set aside a NT$4 billion budget for the project.
The task force is expected to complete its preparations and planning by the end of next year, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2009.

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said.
