Burkina Faso and Taiwan on Thursday renewed their commitment to diplomatic ties during a visit to the west African nation by Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang (黃志芳).
Huang, on a five-nation African tour, pledged to employ "all my efforts to strengthen the brotherly relations between the people of Burkina Faso and Taiwan."
Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore said the "years of cooperation that we have realized with Taiwan are exemplary years and sincere relations that we intend to maintain."
Taiwan forged diplomatic ties with Burkina Faso in 1994.
Burkina Faso is one of five African countries that recognize Taiwan rather than China.
China refuses to maintain diplomatic relations with any nation that recognizes Taiwan and the two governments constantly vie for international recognition.
Africa, Latin America and the South Pacific have been the main battlegrounds for China and Taiwan, which accuse each other of "checkbook diplomacy."
