Typhoon Manyi set to head away from Taiwan: forecasters

    By Shelley Shan
    STAFF REPORTER
    Thursday, Jul 12, 2007, Page 2

Typhoon Manyi is expected to head north, leaving Taiwan out of its direct path, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

The bureau said that the tropical storm became a typhoon at 2am yesterday.

As of 5pm, the typhoon was located 1,120km south-southeast of Okinawa, moving northwest at 25kph.

The bureau forecast that the typhoon would reach 520km south-southeast of Okinawa by 2pm today.

    Headed for Japan

Judging from its course, the typhoon seems poised to head toward Japan at this point, the bureau said, adding that the chances it would approach Taiwan were low.

The bureau said that Typhoon Manyi could affect the weather in Taiwan, depending on the intensity of the high pressure system over the Pacific Ocean.

The bureau said today's temperatures would remain high.

Highs in the west should reach 35oC, and highs in the east should be only slightly lower at 33oC to 34oC.

    Heavy rain, high waves

Chances of afternoon showers are high nationwide today, with heavy rain likely in mountainous areas.

Beachgoers should be alert as high waves are expected along the east coast today and tomorrow.

Sunny and partly cloudly skies will continue tomorrow and Saturday, with afternoon thundershowers possible in the mountains, the bureau said.
