The European People's Party and European Democrats coalition (EPP-ED) -- a parliamentary faction of Christian democrats and conservative parliamentarians in the European Parliament -- were scheduled to host a party yesterday in France to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Taiwan's lifting of martial law.
The lifting of martial law on July 15, 1987, is considered a great contribution to the development of Taiwan's democracy, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said.

Parliament members told the Taipei Representative Office that they are holding the party not only to mark Taiwan's democratic achievements, but to introduce Taiwan's democracy to the international community, the official said.
The parliament has been very supportive of Taiwan's participation in international organizations, and has passed many resolutions in support of Taiwan's membership in the WHO, the official said.
Yesterday's party would be an encouragement to Taiwan in its diplomatic efforts despite recent setbacks, the official said.
