Public lands to be developed to spur business: premier

    By Jimmy Chuang
    STAFF REPORTER
    Tuesday, Jul 03, 2007, Page 2

Premier Chang Chun-hsiung (張俊雄) yesterday said that the government would release four plots of government-owned land for development to stimulate business activity and create more job opportunities.

"This is the main issue that we will discuss, announce and introduce during this Wednesday's Cabinet meeting," Chang told reporters yesterday morning.

"More details about this plan will be made public then," the premier said.

The four plots of land are located in "Huakuang District" next to the Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall; between Keelung Railway Station and Keelung Port's West 1 and West 2 harbors; along Nangang Railway Station; and along the railway that runs through Kaohsiung Port.

Chang said that the Huakuang District, which currently houses several dormitory buildings for Ministry of Justice staffers, would be transformed into "Taiwan's Wall Street."

He added that the plot of land in Keelung would be developed into a tourism center that would include hotels, a night market and different kinds of shops.

Meanwhile, the Nangang land area would be turned into a high-tech industry center, while the plot of land in Kaohsiung would be developed into residential housing, he said.

"More than 5,000 job opportunities will be created with the development of these four plots of land," Chang said.

"[These developments] will help attract more foreign investments and re-ignite local business activity."
