Eager fans of Taiwanese baseball player Wang Chien-ming (王建民), who pitches for the New York Yankees in the US, stayed up to watch a live broadcast of his start against the Boston Red Sox at 1am this morning.

To allow fans to scream and cheer at the top of their lungs for Wang, who has been called the "Light of Taiwan," large outdoor screens were set up at numerous locations in Taipei, including the Shilin Night Market and the squares located in front of several department stores and shopping malls.

    Season debut

When Wang made his season debut on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, thousands of fans around Taiwan, including Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Yu Shyi-kun and former premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), also got up early to catch Wang's performance.

    Second game

Last night's game was Wang's second game in the season after recovering from his leg injury.

Although Wang, who is also affectionately known as Chien Tsai, or "Little Chien," pitched six-and-a-third strong innings in the game against the Devil Rays on Wednesday, but the Yankees bullpen couldn't protect the lead after he departed as Tampa Bay went on to win the game 6-4.
