Songshan Airport underpass now open to traffic

    By Mo Yan-chih
    STAFF REPORTER
    Wednesday, Nov 29, 2006, Page 4

After about 10 years of construction, the Songshan Airport underpass opened yesterday, reducing travel time between downtown Taipei and Neihu (內湖) and Dazhi (大直) by about half an hour.

The 677m long underpass cuts across the airport at the intersection of Fuxing N Road and Minzu E Road and is connected to the Dazhi Bridge. With its completion, commuters to the Neihu and Dazhi area no longer need to make a detour around the airport.

The Taipei City Traffic Control Construction Department said that with a speed limit of 40kph, travel time between downtown Taipei and Neihu could be shortened by half an hour to 40 minutes, or by 18 minutes during rush hour.

Director of the city government's New Construction Office Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) said that the construction of the underpass was an extremely complex project, as some parts overlap with runways that are already in use, which entailed that work could only proceed at night.

Construction of the underpass began in 1997 with a budget of more than NT$4 billion (US$120 million).
