Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) and his wife Shaw Hsiao-ling (邵曉鈴) were injured yesterday evening in a car accident in Tainan County. Hu suffered only minor injuries and was able to walk into hospital unaided. His wife sustained a head injury and a fractured left arm. As of press time, she was in the intensive care unit at Tainan's Chimei Hospital but her life was not in danger. Last night's accident took place on the north-bound section of the Formosa Freeway when Hu and his wife were heading back to Taichung City from Kaohsiung City after campaigning for the Chinese Nationalist Party's (KMT) Kaohsiung candidate Huang Chun-ying (黃俊英). According to TVBS cable news, the car carrying Hu and his wife rolled over after hitting another vehicle on the freeway. The couple were rushed to the nearby Chimei Hospital in Tainan. Shaw was unconscious at one point but regained consciousness after treatment, TVBS said.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7pm yesterday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The epicenter of the temblor was at sea, about 69.9km south of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 30.9km, it said. There were no immediate reports of damage resulting from the quake. The earthquake’s intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung County’s Changbin Township (長濱), where it measured 5 on Taiwan’s seven-tier intensity scale. The nine-day Lunar New Year holiday next year matches the length of this year’s holiday, which featured six extended holidays.
