Kaohsiung candidates Lo, Huang spar in TV debate

By Flora Wang  /  STAFF REPORTER

The first televised debate for Kaohsiung mayoral candidates was held yesterday with an appearance by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) candidate Huang Chun-ying (黃俊英) and Taiwan Solidarity Union candidate Lo Chih-ming (羅志明).

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Chen Chu (陳菊) did not participate in the debate, citing prior engagements.

The other two candidates, Taiwan Defense Alliance candidate Lin Chih-sheng (林志昇) and independent candidate Lin Ching-yuan (林景元) were not invited by event host TVBS for the debate.

Lin Chin-sheng, unhappy that he was not invited to the debate, pressed charges against TVBS on Friday for violation of the Public Official Election and Recall Law (公職人員選舉罷免法) and the Broadcasting and Television Law ( 廣播電視法).

Huang's spokesman Apollo Chen (陳學聖) yesterday expressed regret over Chen's absence.

Lo criticized Chen's absence as a sign of "weakness," saying that the incident suggested that Chen is not worth the voters' trust.

During the debate, Huang and Lo replied to questions from Kaohsiung residents on how they are going to run the city administration and fix the city's unemployment problem.

Lo challenged Huang over his stance on KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) special allowance issue and Keelung Mayor Hsu Tsai-li's (許財利) indictment over corruption, while Huang asked about Lo's resolution to stay in the elections under DPP pressure that he drop out of the race.
