A group dedicated to supporting President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday announced that it would transform itself into a volunteer organization starting today. Convener of the "Friends of A-Bian" group, Gao Jyh-peng (高志鵬), who is also a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator, told reporters that following Chen's re-election in 2004, many members of the group had been pondering its future direction after fulfilling their aim of supporting Chen during the 2004 election. Kao said the decision was made after discussions with Chen, adding that the move echoed the president's goal to promote voluntary service across the nation. "We hope everyone will pay attention to the plight of disadvantaged people around them instead of remaining in a comfort zone," said Li Ching-feng (李慶鋒), chief executive officer of the group.
