In the first eight months of this year, 43,194 couples divorced, up 5.4 percent year-on-year, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday. Among those divorced, 17.7 percent were marriages between Taiwanese nationals and overseas nationals, DGBAS officials said. The crude divorce rate -- or number of divorces per 1,000 people -- rose to 2.9 for the year so far, up slightly from last year's rate of 2.7 per 1,000. Meanwhile, 93,407 couples tied the knot in the eight months to Aug. 31, up 3.3 percent year-on-year. The crude marriage rate -- the number of marriages per 1,000 people -- stood at 6.2 per 1,000. According to a census report released by the Ministry of the Interior, Taiwan's population totaled 22.83 million at the end of last month, with 11.58 million males and 11.25 million females. The population density is 630.9 residents per square kilometer.
