Taiwan Quick Take: Citizenship issue resolvable

Weng Chi-hui (翁啟惠), who will become Academia Sinica's next president next month, could retain his US citizenship if the Presidential Office approves, a spokesman for the nation's top research institution said yesterday. Yeh Yi-hsiung (葉義雄) said that the citizenship law was revised in January so that the leader of an academic institution may hold dual citizenship with the consent of its supervisory organization. Since Academia Sinica is supervised by the Presidential Office, Weng may retain his US citizenship with the president's consent, Yeh said. Weng was short-listed in March to become Academia Sinica's ninth president, and the Presidential Office announced his appointment in May.
