STAFF WRITER WITH AGENCIES

Minister of Transportation and Communications Tsai Duei (蔡堆) said yesterday his ministry is now assessing the viability of building a light rail between the Hongshulin MRT Station and a newly developed area near Tamsui. The project might cost more than NT$5 billion (US$156.2 million) and the construction will take a total of six years to complete. Yin Cheng-pong (尹承蓬), deputy director general of the ministry's department of railways and highways, said the ministry is entrusting a consulting firm to conduct the assessment, for which it has budgeted NT$8 million. The project is aimed at reviving Tamhai New Township (淡海新市鎮), which is located approximately 1km northeast of Tamsui.
