Taiwan Quick Take: Taipei County to buy goats

Taipei County officials said yesterday that the county government would buy all 146 goats from a farm in Linkou Township (林口) to prevent them from entering the food chain after excessive levels of dioxin were found in the animals. According to Hsu Ming-neng (許銘能), head of the county's health bureau, a test conducted last month showed that meat from the goats contained 8.38 picograms of dioxin, exceeding the maximum acceptable level of 3 picograms. As the meat is only sold from November to February every year, the product is currently not available, Hsu said. Early last month, the county ordered the slaughter of 49 goats on a farm in Pali Township (八里) following the discovery of excessive amounts of dioxin in the meat.
