The Presidential Office refused to comment on a media allegation yesterday that President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) daughter used the president's special allowance fund to buy a children's book, but officials stressed that they would take legal action against false reports. An Apple Daily story claimed that the High Prosecutor's Office has asked Eslite Bookstore to provide the receipt for a purchase Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤) made in August 2004. The report said she spent NT$1,000 on the book and some suspected that she used the receipt to claim reimbursement from the special allowance fund. The bookstore confirmed yesterday that it had received a letter from the prosecutor's office and said it was searching for the receipt.
