Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Michel Lu (呂慶龍) yesterday accepted a call from Radio New Zealand International to counter accusations made by New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters, who on Wednesday accused Taiwan of resorting to the "checkbook diplomacy" in the battle with China for Pacific allies. "Taiwan does not play meaningless `dollar diplomacy' and we no longer engage in such competition with China," Lu said. "Our cooperation plans are diversified and aim to promote sustainable development for our allies from the aspects of education, agriculture, medicine and so on. The process is transparent and is closely monitored by our legislature and the media," Lu said, adding that Taiwan cares about regional peace and will make a statement to the Foreign Office of New Zealand through formal diplomatic channels.
