Amid camera flashes and Kenny G music, Miaoli County officials, dressed in traditional Chinese robes, took the stage yesterday at a press conference in Taipei to promote their county's natural beauty. "This year, the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar doubles up, so Chinese Valentine's Day also repeats itself. That's why we're making this year's tourist season about romance," said county Agricultural Bureau Director Han Wen-yu (韓文育). On the Western calendar, all that romance translates into two nights of spectacular fireworks and stage performances at Waipu Wharf (外埔漁港) in Houlung Township (後龍) on Aug. 19 and Aug. 26.
