A group of environmental activists filed a lawsuit against the Tainan County Government yesterday, accusing it of profiteering by allowing a waste disposal company to dump waste near the Wushantou Reservoir (烏山頭水庫). The group, led by Tainan City Environmental Protection Alliance head Huang An-tiao (黃安調), lodged the lawsuit at the Tainan Prosecutor's Office -- the latest act in a seven-year struggle against the waste disposal company that has gained the county government's approval to dump garbage at a site near the water catchment of the reservoir. Huang said that the group would also petition the Tainan County Government, demanding a ban on the company's incoming operations in order to protect water resources in the area. Wushantou Reservoir is one of the most important water providers in southern Taiwan. The county government respects the group's move and hopes that the truth will be fully explored through legal means, Tainan County Deputy Commissioner Yen Chun-tso (顏純左) said.
