The Kaohsiung Computer Association is urging city residents to join its efforts to recycle compact discs to reduce pollution. An association spokesman said the group received a good response to the drive, which was launched at a recent five-day computer fair. Association officials participated in the fair to raise awareness of the importance of recycling used CDs, which release dioxin and carbon dioxide when incinerated, polluting water and soil, the spokesman said. The group's efforts are beginning to pay off as many stores in Kaohiung have begun using discarded CDs as decorations or as a reflecting devices on bikes, the spokesman said. He noted that Taiwan produces some 5 billion CDs per year.
