Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) said yesterday that Taiwan should not be over-reliant on China but should set its sights on the whole world. Lu made the remarks when she addressed the inauguration of the new president of the Taiwan Confederation of Trade Unions. She said that Taiwanese investment in China had grown rapidly and the public should not criticize the government for being too conservative in cross-strait trade, given such rapid growth. Taiwan has put all its eggs into the basket of China, she said, adding that over-reliance could turn Taiwan into a bigger version of Penghu, which suffers a brain drain and backward infrastructure. She urged the public not to denigrate Taiwan, saying that compared with South Korea, the country's foreign trade and consumer price index were good. Taiwan also recorded an unemployment rate of 3.84 percent in May and increased its foreign currency reserves, she added.
