A study by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) found that Fulong Beach in Taipei County has the best water quality of all the beaches in the nation. The study, conducted on July 16 and 17, ranked Fulong as "excellent." The water quality of the beach in Jinsan (金山), Taipei County, and Kenting (墾丁), Pingtung County, was "good," while Chiding (崎頂) in Hsinchu County and Chichin (旗津) in Kaohsiung City, were ranked "average." Five beaches failed the test: Tunghsiau (通宵) in Miaoli County, Daan (大安) in Taichung County, Mashango (馬山溝) in Tainan County, Shiziwan (西子灣) in Kaohsiung County and Shanyuan (杉原) in Taitung County. Beaches were rated based on the amount of escherichia coli, a bacteria that leads to intestinal diseases, found in the water. The latest water quality report is available online (epa.gov.tw/beach). The agency reminded the public to avoid going to a beach within three days of a typhoon because debris washed from the land might contaminate the waters.
