Taiwan Quick Take: City celebrates young adults

The Tainan City Government will sponsor an "initiation festival" starting next Tuesday for youth who are turning 16 years old this year, a city government spokesman said yesterday. The city will hold a series of activities in the area adjacent to its Confucian temple, and is welcoming the public to participate in events blending traditional rituals with modern arts, the spokesman said. The festivities will last until the last day of the month -- Chinese Valentine's Day. Celebrating young men and women's 16th year is a traditional custom in the city -- signifying a time when boys and girls come of age and begin assuming familial and societal responsibilities. In addition to exhibitions by local artists, groups from Japan, Singapore and South Korea will also be invited to give musical and acrobatic performances at the festival, the spokesman said.
