New information official in US touts UN entry campaign

UN STRATEGY A new Taiwanese official in New York has come up with a three-pronged approach for entering the UN that involves US public opinion

The nation has never abandoned a peaceful approach to enhancing cross-strait ties, so its status as a "peace-loving nation" will play a key role in Taiwan's campaign for UN membership this year, the new chief of the Information Division of Taiwan's Representative Office in New York said on Friday.

Shao Ping-yun (邵平雲), who recently assumed the post, told CNA that by taking on the position he faces a tough challenge: bringing Taiwan into the UN.

In response, Shao has devised a three-pronged approach focusing on US public opinion: introducing the history and culture of the Republic of China to the US population; informing people in the US about Taiwan's political situation and apprising people in Taiwan about US opinions of the country.

Shao said he will try to enhance his office's connections and communication with mainstream media outlets in the US, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and take advantage of all kinds of cultural resources such as film in efforts to boost US understanding of Taiwan.

In September, the division is scheduled to hold a film exhibition in New York focusing on Taiwanese women, Shao noted.

Before assuming the post, Shao was head of the Information Division of Taiwan's Representative Office in Chicago.
