Taiwan Quick Take: Prisoners going bananas
Saturday, Jul 01, 2006, Page 4
Prison inmates are gobbling up three bananas a day to help the government cope with the glut in banana production, a justice ministry official said yesterday. The ministry has bought 18 tonnes of bananas from the Department of Agriculture, so that the nation's 60,000 inmates can enjoy one banana after each meal, instead of being able to eat fruit only three times a week, a Department of Corrections official said. "The convicts are very happy," the official said.
