Taiwan Quick Take: Taipei to offer subsidy
Friday, Jun 30, 2006, Page 3
The Taipei City Government will offer a NT$500 subsidy per semester to students at public elementary schools who are the third child or higher in their family, starting this fall. The measure was adopted on Tuesday as part of an effort to encourage residents to have more children because the city's birth rate has been dropping in recent years, a city official said. Several initiatives have been proposed by city agencies, including a plan to allow the third child or upward in a family to be given priority to attend public preschools, as well as a proposal to provide such children with medical subsidies in the form of reduced registration fees at hospitals and local clinics.
