Wednesday, Jun 28, 2006, Page 3
The number of drug abuse cases dropped between January and April compared with the same period last year, the Department of Health said yesterday. Abuse of morphine fell by 45.5 percent, while that of MDMA, or ecstasy -- a common drug among teenagers -- declined by 63 percent, according to the department's release. Amphetamine use for the first four months of this year also decreased by 347 cases over last year. However, abuse of heroin and cannabis dropped only slightly, by 10.4 percent and 16.7 percent. The health department official said codeine abuse had risen 300 percent, because drugs that were mixed with codeine were common.
