The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) yesterday said there was nothing to worry about over electromagnetism in the newly opened Hsuehshan Tunnel as the levels are far lower than the recommended maximum level.
EPA officials made the comments to dispel public concern after drivers found they had no difficulty in using cellphones and radios while inside the tunnel.
The EPA invited officials from the National Communications Commission and the Department of Health to carry out tests late last month.
The results showed that the levels of electromagnetism released by the wiring under the tunnel and five cellphone base stations located at the southern and northern ends of the tunnel were far lower than the recommended maximum level for non-ionizing radiation.
